Set on the Mississippi River, Chester is located in southern Illinois – and is best known as the home of Popeye. A six-foot, 900 lb. bronze commemoration of the famed sailor stands in the Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park – found next to Chester Bridge and featuring other characters from the cartoon, created by Chester's own Elzie Segar. Memorial Day weekend brings the annual Popeye Picnic & Parade, drawing thousands of Popeye fans.

Chester visitors may also explore the Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site and Pierre Menard's Home – the 1815 Creole-style structure and former home of Illinois' first lieutenant governor.
