Commercial and general aviation travel needs are well met in the Chicago area. The Chicago Rockford International Airport, located south of Rockford, has roots dating back to 1917. Camp Grant, a United States Army Cavalry Camp, was established during World War 1. The Camp was also used as a training base, during World War II. In 1946, this 2,900 acre regional airport was established as the Greater Rockford Airport. With the addition of a terminal and the two United Parcel Service cargo facilities, the airport became busy with cargo transportation, as well as commercial flights.
Although the majority of flights are general aviation flights, commercial flights are available to Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Denver, Cancun and Fort Myers, via Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines and Vision Airlines. The airport's location approximately 68 miles northwest of Chicago, makes it conducive for travelers outside of Chicago. Lowden State Park
Lowden State Park sits on 207 acres in northern Illinois, 100 miles west of Chicago and 25 miles southwest of Rockford. The park hosts the iconic Black Hawk Statue - a 77-foot statue visitors can see from the road - and a number of outdoor activities. The Rock River flows through the park, allowing visitors to swim, fish and boat. Take a load off at one of the many picnic areas, or check out nearly four miles of hiking trails.
Lowden State Park is also found along Rock River Run, a popular motorcycle trails and one of many rides in Illinois. After an adventurous day at the park, check into the Best Western hotel in Rockford - just a scenic 40-minute drive away.
