Visiting Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois is well prepared for the winter cold. Communities from Effingham to Nashville to Pontoon Beach celebrate the season with an abundance of community festivals and get-togethers. See it all during a visit this season.
One of the best ways to see the sights in southern Illinois is by embarking on a memorable journey along the Mother Road – Route 66 passes through Alton and Mascoutah, featuring intriguing stops all along the way.
Carbondale visitors can find a sense of the holiday spirit by heading down to Main Street. On December 2nd, the community comes together to decorate the trees all along the business strip, and the lights continue to twinkle throughout December. Come down and do a little holiday shopping. Light Up Carbondale 2016 sees area merchants offering hot deals – and even some warm drinks – all month long.
The 2017 Alton Restaurant Week is an opportunity to enjoy a warm meal in one of Alton’s best restaurants. In mid January, Locally owned restaurants along the Byway in downtown Alton offer their best dishes and off-menu items with special prices. It’s the perfect way to sample a taste of the town.
Anglers flock to Marion for the 2017 Crappie USA Super Tournament March 10th and 11h. Held at Lake of Egypt, the three-day event is made up several different amateur and pro-style competitions for cash prizes, while spectators are treated to meet-and-greets, gear seminars, and more.
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale spring semester is in session, providing countless cultural events to students and the Carbondale community. The SIU Carbondale Salukis are also the pride of sports fans in the area, and the Salukis men’s baseball schedule goes through the end of May. Like, the basketball squad is working towards a berth in the 2017 March Madness tournament up until the end of February. Catch a game this season.
