Visiting Southern Illinois
Make the most of your next visit to southern Illinois. From Alton to Chester and out east to Robinson, you’ll find an impressive array of attractions, events, festivals, concerts and more. And during the fall, the southern Illinois landscape is pleasant and inviting.
Effingham will make for an ideal travel destination this fall. Full of charm, and always welcoming, Effingham will be hosting some must-see concert events this season. Make your way to the Effingham Performance Center for a batch of great shows – November 17th sees country music legend Vince Gill take the stage, and on December 31st you can check out the Lionel Richie Experience.
If you’re plans have you exploring southern IL slightly earlier in the fall, head for Village Wine & Gifts on September 2nd at 7 p.m. to see the band Tequila Mockingbyrd play some of their hits like So Not Me, Everyone Down, and Money Tree.
Be sure you make time to explore Carbondale and the surrounding area this fall. The college football season will be in full swing, and you’ll want to experience some of the action for yourself. Plan your visit to the area over the weekend of November 19th and watch as the Southern Illinois Salukis close out their regular season against the Western Illinois Leathernecks – kickoff is 2 p.m. at Saluki Stadium.
Don’t miss one of the concert events of the year in Du Quoin. Found just to the north of Carbondale, Du Quoin will host their annual Du Quoin State Fair from August 26th to September 5th. On the last day of the fair, you can catch the Summerland Tour 2016, featuring some of your favorites like Everclear, Sugar Ray, and Lit. The show starts at 4 p.m.
Any visit to southern Illinois should include some wine tasting. Though the region may not be as widely known for its wine production as, say, northern California, the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail has become a major wine player.
This fall, over the weekend November 5th and 6th, you can experience many of these wine varietals yourself at the Wine & Food Pairing Weekend in Pomona. You’ll tour 12 unique wineries in the Shawnee Hills, each offering their own take on your favorite reds and whites.
